What is Opus Lux?

In the past few years, several digital products, including wearable technology and apps, have changed how we interact at live concerts/events and given us a reason to use our smartphones for something other than watching a concert.

Opus Lux is an application for smartphones and tablets that enables you to express the emotional impact, that the music or experience has on you and send the expressions back to the eventspace or concert-hall as color signals.

Opus Lux is a collaborative tool that enables the audience to make a collective, realtime impact at a concert—or any event—beyond mere applauding and cheering. It is done by collecting feedback from the audience and transforming it into an augmented layer that expands the concert experience.

During Opus Lux concerts the audience is co-creators of a unique live light scenography along with the music and the musicians.

How it works:

When the music is playing, you, being an audience, gets the opportunity to select a color from the app's color / emotional compass. The color is chosen intuitively from what the music inspires you.

All color choices are collected in an online administration module where they are visaualized into a mapping, to show the choices of the crowd.

The Visual mapping – a graph, can be directly translated into a ligth expression, a music score or some other digital or analogue output.

Examples:

During a period of 1,5 years Opus Lux has been tried out in different contexts.

The Exambles below can give you some inspiration on how to integrate the Opus Lux app into your concert or event experience:

Example: Øresundstinget

Opus Lux used for a political conference. When a particular political topic was discussed, the audience member chose colours according to whether he or she supported that notion or not. The aggregated choices were turned into a graph-based score, which orchestra musicians used as a guide to interpret and perform a musical piece.
